Witch Hunt in Catalonia, between the sixteenth and seventeenth

Influenced by witch-hunting in Europe, Catalunya was not far behind in terms of processes and performances are concerned. It is known that between 1617 and 1622 were carried out 400 executions reported. If only there were 400 in 5 years, how many could be reached in the two centuries-long barbarism? It should be noted, however, that between 1617 and 1622 was the "game" per se , the height of those processes in which we focus.

the year 1617 lived Catalunya one of the worst periods in its history this year, plus several epidemics and plagues, lived the so-called "Flood" of 1617, several weeks of continuous flooding and natural disasters. All that could have only one reason: the Devil. In fact many of the witch persecutions were based on the belief that they caused the storms and destroying crops, and that was the worst that could happen. The authorities obviously were witches as being responsible for anything that would generate social unrest, so I supported until the end of these persecutions.

Catalunya was not exempt from characters who openly took advantage of these processes: the witch hunters. Surely the most famous of the territory outside Cosme Soler, also called Tarragó, together with Laurent Calmell, Joan and Jordi Malet Aliberc. Tarrago, however, was the best known, as well as having knowledge of herbs, therefore, he could have been tried as a witch, he boasted of being able to find the mark of the devil in the bodies of the accused: a mark on a houndstooth. Finally, it ended up being imprisoned by the bishop of Solsona, but was released and continued his practice until 1620.

And so began the process by first accused with or without foundation, the madness was spreading, and spent a territory to another. Thus, to achieve all of Catalonia, and up to 400 victims passed by the gallows. In the case of Catalonia, unlike the cases of Zugarramundi in Euskadi, the Inquisition had no role, but the judges were officers and gentlemen royal courts. Of torture practices were extracted and the names of the other partners of rituals, and thus the scope of the witch hunt was growing.
