Castanyada and Tots Sants: Celtic ancestry in the agricultural calendar Catalunya

You know when the date approaches Samhain or Halloween, restated always holding the post about Celtic Reconstructionist, but this year I decided I should empzar to do the same with the pagan celebration in Catalunya, so extensive and intense as in the case of Anglo-Celtic version.

Castanyada is a traditional festival that is celebrated and twentieth centuries past October 31st and November 1st, so therefore we are not facing any reformulation of modern Halloween adapted to the Mediterranean world, but it is a tradition, which certainly shares much in common with Anglo-Celtic this event we despise unfairly. But the point that the origins of the feast that follows the Castanyada, Tots Sants-All Saints-back, according to Joan Soler i Amigó to the ancient funerary festivals in Europe, in which case we find a direct reference to Samhain.

This festival originally nothing to do with all the saints, but all the Gods, and the proof is the task carried out by Pope Boniface IV consecrated the Pantheon
(all gods) to All Saints in the seventh century. Two centuries later, fixed the date of the festival on November 1, presumably to replace the pagan version of a non-traumatic to society.

This would only try to show that what we now call a Tots Sants funeral feast ancient pre-Christian origin, which follows the process of Christianization of the holiday that began in Rome. Tots Sants But the party is not particularly interested me, but its eve, which retains a curious way a typical local pagan ritualistic.

The first official witness the ritual celebration of the Castanyada accepted in Catalonia once Christianized, dates from 1033, when the saw assembly
c Olive Bishop's festivities included within accepted. Thus, it is easily deduced that this event was held before that date, and apparently, in the same way that until recently few decades. Castanyada place, like Samhain and modern Halloween, the union of this world with the World of the Dead or the Other World, and the presence of the dead who wander through the world of the living for this night.

The Reconstructionist ritual Castanyada catalan is a nightly ritual in which light lunch and have an ongoing role. It is a solemn but not sad time, as they sell. As in the case of Samhain, celebrated Castanyada death but also life left in this world, and recognizes the changing seasons with the same respect as a summer party.

The food in this case consists of nuts, dried fruits and desserts with it. The nuts and chestnuts are an indicator of the upcoming absence of fresh fruit, and are closely related to the dead. Panellets-or even in other parts of the bones of Saint-candy made with sweet potatoes, almonds and pine nuts, were the "bread" which were offered to the dead and the family ate that night, a night in which it was important stay awake to remember with joy to those who are not. That night was lit in the home or in the center of town, a fire that served to guide the spirits of the dead to visit their relatives live, and to toast the nuts and fruits that were eaten at the height of autumn. As corresponding May 1, Oct. 31 marks the end of all life agricultural, livestock are kept and now can only come the cold, so that night is the beginning of a dark half of the year, and as such should be celebrated with joy, perhaps getting rid of this sad and tragic tone with which permeated the Christian tradition since the rapture of the peoples of Europe.
